The wild olive tree has been around since prehistoric times. Though tracing its exact origins appears to be an impossible task, most theories point to southern Asia Minor where one can still find abundant forests of the wild olive tree. Other theories place the origins in the wider Mediterranean basin, yet others claim it has originated in Lower Egypt, where mummies of the 20th Dynasty have been found with crowns made out of olive branches.It is further alleged that from Egypt, the Phoenicians spread its cultivation to Cyprus, Morocco, Tunisia and elsewhere. In any case, the olive tree has been in the Eastern Mediterranean for many thousands of years and there is enough evidence to prove that it was cultivated more than 5,000 years ago while olive oil production began much later at around 2000 BC.
Crete is the place most closely associated with the Olive tree, because of its abundant presence on the island, its importance to the Minoan civilization, and the significant role that it still plays in the lives of the local inhabitants. The French researcher Paule Faure notes that 'the honor of having domesticated wild olive trees into ones that were cultivated, belongs to the villagers of the great island of Crete'
